This could be the best time ever to be job searching
Could this be the best time ever to be looking for a job? Could be. Today’s unemployment rate is lower than it’s been in decades. Employers have dramatically lowered their standards to fill positions that, only a couple of years ago, they were very picky about.
The better news is that, even if your skills aren’t up to date, even if you’re interested in learning some new skills, there is a plethora of resources available for your consumption. What’s more, many of these resources are free and many of them – through the internet – are virtually at your fingertips.
If you’re a book person, there are job-search books a plenty. Just check the Nifty50s library. Also keep up with the Nifty50s and you’ll find articles, videos and more on everything from cover letters and resumes, to interview techniques, questions and preparation. We have advice on virtually every aspect of your job search.
In addition, there are seminars and webinars aplenty. There are video tutorials on YouTube and other websites. Check out TED Talks for compelling ideas and information.
Then there are full courses at your local community colleges. You’ll find courses on job seeking, technology, specific job skills and more. And don’t overlook your local library. There you can find seminars, courses to introduce you to and upgrade your computer skills.
Some libraries and churches sponsor job-support groups where job seekers can hear presentations from experts in addition to being able to mix and mingle with peers for advice and even job leads.
Is it the best of times or the worst of times? Maybe it’s both. There is nothing worse that being over the age of 50 and find yourself out of a job. It can be debilitating and depressing. It also be uplifting. For all the reasons mentioned above – and more – this could be the best time ever to be searching for a job.
