Ready to broaden your job search horizons?
➔ Maybe you feel as though you’ve exhausted all the potential employers in your given industry. Or, maybe you just want a change of scenery. Whatever the reason, many older job seekers face the possibility of – not necessarily changing careers – but changing industries.
Is this possible? Is it advisable?
Is it possible? Sure. People do it all the time. But, is it advisable? That’s a more difficult question to answer – and a question maybe only you can answer.
Although the grass may seem greener in that other pasture, you really should strive to maintain realistic goals before and during the process. Don't set yourself up for failure.
When considering a new industry, what are the barriers to entry? Is it really worth your while to commit the time, money and effort to make that switch?
If you’re still convinced that you want to make the move, where do you start? Well, use your network. Why not talk to some people who work in that target industry? If you have no contacts in that industry, utilizing LinkedIn to schedule “informational” interviews should not be terribly difficult.
Then, ask the right questions. According to one recruiter, “Think about where you would be able to add value.” How can you “fit in” to your new industry? How can your present skills transfer?
Don’t forget to be as diligent in researching companies in your target industry as you are in finding the right people. You’re going to have to do the company research if you’re fortunate enough to land interview, so why not get a jump on the game and look at companies now?
Doing all the right things will make the switch more likely. If you can maintain and exhibit your passion, energy and determination, you’ve got a real shot at making the move.
